Preparing for Your Tan:

  1. Exfoliate your skin at least 8 hours prior to your appointment.  This promotes an even coverage and lengthens the duration of your tan by removing dead skin that would otherwise flake off.
  2. Wax a minimum of 24 hours before your appointment or shave at least 8 hours before or after post tanning shower.
  3. Do not apply any type of skin care product such as moisturizer, makeup or deodorant, which can act as a barrier to the spray and prevent the process from working properly prior to application.
  4. Wear either a dark colored swimsuit or undergarments.  Or, if you prefer no tan lines, you may tan nude.  However, it is recommended that you at least wear some type of bottom.  Have dark, loose fitting clothing for afterwards.

For best results please follow the above instructions.

Maintaining Your Tan:

  1. Wait at least 8 to 12 hours before showering, best results shoot for at least 12 hours.
  2. Keep skin as hydrated as possible by applying moisturizer at least twice a day. Avoid moisturizers that contain AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) because they promote exfoliation.
  3. Avoid long hot showers or baths and scrubbing the skin.  If you use a washcloth, choose one that is as soft as possible.  Excessive friction on your skin may prematurely fade your tan.
  4. Chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs may remove or shorten the length of your tan.
  5. Take care when exercising as friction and excess sweat may cause your tan to fade prematurely or unevenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do you have?
I am a Spray Tanning Technician and have been trained and certified to apply spray tan solution using HVLP spray tanning equipment on courses approved by National Tanning Training Institute.

How does spray tanning work?
Your body is sprayed with a solution that contains a certain percentage of DHA (DiHydroxyAcetone), a colorless sugar which reacts with the Amino acids in the dead layers of your skin and over a period of a few hours goes brown - just the same as an apple does when you have bitten it!

Is spray tanning safe?
DHA, the active ingredient in the solution has been approved for external application to the human body, which is the way these products are intended to be used but do not recommend inhalation of the product. Consumers can easily avoid inhaling them or applying them to the area of the eye or mucous membrane. Consequently, FDA advises asking the following questions when considering commercial facilities where DHA is applied by spraying or misting:

  • Are consumers protected from exposure in the entire area of the eyes, in addition to the eyes themselves?
  • Are consumers protected from exposure on the lips and all parts of the body covered by mucous membrane?
  • Are consumers protected from internal exposure caused by inhaling or ingesting the product?

DHA based Sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association.

Mia Sol Tanning can provide protective covering for eyes and nose but if you feel strongly we can just skip the facial area all together.

How long does a spray tan last?
Your body constantly 'sloughs off' dead skin cells. This is why natural sun tans fade over a few days. Spray tanning only affects the outer skin layer, so again, as your skin cells are naturally shed, the spray tan will fade. Your tan should last 5-10 days, typically 7 days, but longer if you look after your skin by moisturizing every day. However, we cannot offer a guarantee as everyone is different.

Can anyone have a spray tan?
Most people are suitable to have a spray tan. We suggest that women who are pregnant wait until after the child is born to tan.  Those with severe asthma or with very sensitive skin refrain from spray tanning. However, if you are unsure, please contact us we can test you in advance.

I am diabetic, is spray tanning OK for me?
DHA is a chemical derived from glycerin and was first used in the treatment of diabetes, as some diabetics are better able to tolerate DHA than glucose in their treatment! So basically, yes you can have a sunless spray tan.  As we do with all clients, we ask when spraying near the face to hold your breath as to not inhale.

Is it OK for people of any age to spray tan?
Yes it is. However, we require the signature and presence of the parent or guardian for those under 18. Also, we require that they are clothed in either swim trunks for males or bikini for females (or equivalent clothing).

Is spray tanning messy or smelly?
No. I will set up a spray tan booth in your home. The HVLP sprayer produces a very precise spray and any overspray is caught in the booth. There is a faint sweet smell, and that is all.

Will I go orange or streaky with a spray tan?
No, absolutely not! You can expect the same reaction you would if you had sat in the sun as the DHA is creating the same reaction that the sun makes.  Some are light brown, some
have a small hint of pink at first but then turn a nice brown.  My solution is top of the line and there is no streaking.  Orangeness is the result of tanning pills, and older tanning agents. A professional spray tan with modern tanning agents avoids this, and streakiness is caused by improper application of home tanning creams and sprays - which is why you should always let a professional apply your tan.
